(English is below)

“Old Instruments From the Future, New Instruments From the Past” CD
Edition OMEGA POINT OPX-016

- I began exploring instrument design through AI-generated images as early as 2020, but the explosive rise of generative AI in 2023 allowed me to experiment with a wider variety of prompts more easily. As a result, I accumulated a collection of images depicting instruments that could potentially be constructed in the real world.

While generative AI learns from images of instruments created by humans, it does not inherently understand how these instruments produce sound. However, my premise for all of my AI projects is to assume that AI comprehends the concept of musical instruments in a way distinct from human understanding. AI-designed instruments are not created for humans but rather as instruments for AI itself.

Therefore, this project involves faithfully constructing physical versions of instruments designed by AI, interpreting the playing methods suitable for these instruments, and drawing music from them. In this process, humans —in this case, myself— must adopt AI, not the other way around. This approach delves into a largely unexplored realm: what "body" means for AI.
Four instruments were created for this project, with their names decided in consultation with the AI.

The exhibition, "Old Instruments From the Future, New Instruments From the Past#(and Characters)((by Artificial Intelligence))," was held from May 27 to August 4, 2024, as the 15th-anniversary celebration of Kanazawa Art Gummi. The exhibition featured the instruments themselves alongside videos of their performances, presented as a four-channel audiovisual installation.
The instruments, excluding their electronic components, were constructed by Daigo Ohmura. - from liner note
