Music for Piano No.1 - No.7 were 7 piano music composed between 1959 and 1961. All the works are written by graphic notations (No.1, No.2, No.5 and No.7) and instructions (No.3, No.4 and No.6). In this period of my compositions such as Music for Electric Metronomes, Stanzas for string instrument, Duet for piano and string instrument and Sapporo are all written by graphic notations which expanded my idea of space in music of later compositions. Premier of Music for Piano No.2 was taken place in 1959 by David Tudor at Living Theatre in New York. No.5 was by Yuji Takahashi, No.4, No.6 and No.7 were by myself. It is first time to have all 7 pieces played open to public and recorded at the same time.
Various techniques as well as different qualities of the sounds were created by amazing manner of pianist Takuji Kawai's playing in this recording through my graphic notations. He played all the sounds of musical sounds, noise, concrete sounds without using any electronic device but by live natural sounds only to reflect 1950 to early 60's social situation. - Toshi Ichiyanagi


It was in ca2009 that I once again started to play written new music after longtime activities as an improviser. One of the projects I had in mind then was to play 'graphic pieces', hoping to make such music alive through my experiences as an improviser. Among many pieces, Ichiyanagi's series of 'Music for Piano' seemed to me an important milestone.
I finally realized my concert to play them at KEN, Sangen-jaya, Tokyo as organized by Ken Awazu and myself on 27 October 2012. This disc is a live recording of that concert.

profile of Takuji Kawai
Born in 1963. Pianist, improviser, composer. Began to learn piano (classical style) at the age of four. And began to improvise around 1986. After graduating from Kyoto University (philosophy major), Kawai got master degree in musicology at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1991. Since late 1980s, he has been active to have a concert as a pianist/improviser. In 2008 and 2012 he toured in Europe (Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin). He was invited to play in the "1st UnCaged Toy Piano Festival" in New York in 2011. Currently living in Fukuoka, Japan.
